I was fresh out of the army at 22 years old and despite sending out so many resumes, i didn’t get a single reply. So while waiting for opportunities, i took up a job as a waiter in a wine bar in Robertson Quay.
I quickly fell into the rhythm of the place. I learned to navigate the intricate dance of balancing trays laden with delicate glasses of wine, gliding between tables with practiced ease. Within a week, i was recommending food, not wine to the patrons. I’m not exactly a wine drinker and all but two months in, i’m confident enough to start recommending wine.
My favorite part of the job was interacting with the guests. I discovered a love for recommending wines based on their preferences, guiding them through the vast selection with a passion that surprised even myself. Much of it was bullshit though, i know nuts about vineyards and the countries they were in, mostly i just read it off the internet. Small talks like these it seems, were rather useful in securing an extra tip every now and then.
I was beginning to settle into the groove of the job and a part of me was beginning to consider giving up my job hunt and just be a waiter for a while and see how things goes. I converted from part time to full time, with a pay bump, better benefits plus the tips i get, i’m getting a comfortable 3ish on an average month. That’s quite a lot of a Diploma holder who barely scrapped through his civil engineering course.
I was already planning for holidays, shortlisting places i want to visit when my life was turned upside down by women.
It was a Friday evening and i first noticed the table of 3 when they gestured for me to take their order.
I didn’t get a good look of the girls when they came in, i knew they were all rather good looking. These are not your usual xiao mei mei on a budget night out, they are the confident working women blazing their own paths in their industry.
When i went over to take their orders, i had a good look at them and that was when it struck me how beautiful and hot they were. And a quick glance around told me the men on other tables shared the same consensus as me. They seemed as if they were jealous i was able to interact with them even though it was my job to do so.
I seldom felt nervous when talking to pretty women but for the first time, i felt a hint of intimidation as i realised all 3 of them were looking at me with a playful smile.
Three beautiful women, their laughter filling the air, eyes twinkling with playful mischief. They seemed to share an unspoken bond, evident in their seamless exchanges and the way their smiles lit up the room. You know the kind of vibe you get when people whispered and giggled while looking at you, that was exactly what i felt when i stood at their table.
James : Hi ladies, what can i get you tonight?
“Hi James…”
The woman closest to me looked at my name tag and angled her body towards me.
She’s wearing a blouse the color of a light latte and a skirt that hits at her waist, paired with black heels. Her legs are crossed elegantly, giving her a classy and beautiful appearance.
James : ermm..hi…
She exchanged a look with her friends who are equally hot and began to place her order with me.
“ We want the Merlot that’s on promotion.”
James : of course. And what can i get you for dinner?
“Sausages…”
I looked up at her in surprise and she completed the order properly, asking for a sausage, cheese and ham sharing platter.
James: ok…anything else?
“Give us a Ruccola and Parma ham pizza and warm water for all please.”
James : alright. May i keep the menu?
The girls, still with their playful smile, collected the menu and handed it over. I was about to receive it from the woman who placed the order when she took it away from my reach.
James : err…you want me to leave a menu here?
“ haha. One more thing. I’ll like to have your number”
James : what?
She handed the menu back to me before gesturing for my phone with two fingers waving towards herself. I felt as if i was hypnotised and i just couldn’t react.
James : You serious?
“do i look like i’m joking? haha”
James : i ermm…
I held their order and the menu with one hand, and pulled out my phone slowly, unsure if i was dreaming.
Huiwen : I’m Huiwen, nice to meet you James. These are my friends, Lifang and Sharmaine.
I haven got past the stage of making eye contact and trying to take in how beautiful all 3 of them are when Huiwen is already giving herself a miss call with my phone.
After she’s done, she stuffed the phone back into my pocket before going back to her whispers and giggles with her friends.
I snapped out of my daze and went back to my job. I took it as a joke, or a dare among friends you know, to get the waiter’s contact and whatever.
As i keyed in the order, i stole a glance at Huiwen and wondered if that was her real name. By my estimates, she is about 1.65m tall, 50kg thereabouts, has a shapely figure and a sweet smile. I know she is older than me, i could tell, but i don;t know exactly how old she is.
She had a presence about her, a mysterious allure that drew me in despite my attempts to focus on my job. When I delivered their food and drinks, I couldn’t help but steal glances at Huiwen, admiring the way the light danced in her eyes as she laughed with her friends.
Huiwen : Thank you James…
She would say with a flirty giggle whenever i went over, much to the amusement of her friends.
They finished 3 bottles of wine and were one of the last customers to leave the restaurant. Huiwen gestured for the bill and i brought it over to her.
She put an Amex Platinum card on the bill without even looking at it.
I settled the account and when i brought the card back to her, Huiwen took it and placed another card on the bill presenter. It was not a credit card. It was a room card to the hotel across the road.
I froze and looked at her, trying to comprehend what that meant.
Huiwen : It’s my birthday today James… I understand from your manager you knock off at 11pm. I’m in room 611.
Lifang and Shermaine giggled and looked at me with an equally flirtatious manner.
James : I…
Huiwen : I’ll see you in a while then.
The girls got up and resumed their whispers and giggles as they walked out of the restaurant.
I took the card and kept it, my heart racing as if i’m about to head off a roller coaster without the safety belt.
It’s probably a prank, a joke, probably a dare.
I finished up my work, punched out my time card and when i stepped out onto the main road, i turned and looked at the hotel just a few steps away.
James : fuck it…
It’s probably just a joke, but if it means getting to see Huiwen and her friends one more time. I don’t mind being the butt of the joke. I went back to the restaurant and took a slice of cake from the fridge. I wanted to pay for it but my manager say it’s ok. I grabbed a few candles and put them all into a bag.
I entered the hotel and made my way up to the room.
I thought i’ll knock first, but then remembered the key card in my pocket.
Tapping it against the reader, i saw the light turn green and the latch unlocked.
I turned the handle and pushed the door open, expecting to see the girls laughing and making fun of me.
As I entered the room, I was greeted by the sight of Huiwen in her bathrobe, blow-drying her hair. She sat on the edge of the bed with her lovely legs crossed and smiled at me warmly.
Huiwen : Hi James…come in…
I hesitated but Huiwen’s smile drew me in like the songs of sirens. I stepped in and the next thing i knew, i heard the door shut behind me with a thud.
