When you first get to know Dan, you will think he is that cool, already ‘made it in life’ kind of chap. He’s very chill, projects an image that he’s loaded, and that everything he does, he does it for fun.

His social media feed is the standard ‘made it in life package’. By that, i meant pictures of him leaning against his BMW, hands in his pocket, and some cringe worthy quote.

To take the cringe level up a notch, there is the ‘checking the time’ on his rolex against the steering wheel of his BMW.

I don’t know what my sister in law Suzy sees in him, because she, of all people, knew it was all an illusion. Dan works in facility management, his pay is barely 5k, and it’s amazing how he manages to create that illusion with limited resources.

Perhaps not paying for mortgage is a crucial factor since all of us are staying in the same landed property belonging to my in laws.

My wife, Lisa and i are waiting for our BTO in Tengah. Once it’s ready in a year, we’ll be moving out and starting a life of our own. Dan however, has other plans. He wanted that private address on his IC. He wanted that sheltered car porch where he can drive his BMW right to the front door.

Now my in laws don’t exactly like Dan, they don’t say it verbally because of Suzy but you could tell from their body language. My father in law, Keng, was a businessman for many years before he retired. If there is one thing you cannot hide from someone in business, it’s bullshit.

It doesn’t matter if you are running a small business or a big conglomerate, the underlying idea is the same. As long as you are in business long enough, you can smell bullshit a mile away.

Smelling the shit and calling it out are two different things. Keng, did not call out on Dan’s shit, like a poker player, he held his cards close to his chest.

He knew one day, truth will eventually surface.

That day was July 2017.

The day Dan came home with his BMW, with a private hire sticker on the windscreen.

Needless to say, Suzy was horrified and demanded to know what that meant. Dan reluctantly admitted that to keep up the installments, he was doing some private hire jobs after work and on weekends.

Now, there is nothing wrong with that, he’s putting his own effort to make money, but Suzy was very upset at Dan. My father in law said nothing but he could not hide that smirk on his face when he turned away.

It’s like a confirmation for his shit smelling ability.

The dominos started to fall from then. In 2018, Dan’s mounting credit card debt comes up to a whooping 63000. He did not declare bankrupt, he borrowed money from Suzy to pay it off and has been returning her 1000 every month. He should pay it off in 5 years if nothing fucks up.

In 2019 December, he happily accepted a new job with a 25% increment. He started work for 5 days in March before and the company folded. 5 days.

Instead of coming clean, he pretends to be employed for a while before the covid lockdown forced him to stay at home.

He didn’t even have a laptop to pretend to work from home with.

Suzy forced him to sell his car, his only Rolex, and basically every shit he bought on installment, from his latest handphone to his gaming console.

Suzy tells Lisa everything, and i always get the latest gossip from my wife. So when she tells me that Dan is looking to start his own business and requires some capital, i could tell it was the beginning of another disaster.

That Friday evening, when my mother in law, Wen, set down the pasta she made for dinner, Dan said he had an announcement to make.

Out comes a vanguard sheet with diagrams and scribbles which reminds me of a primary school project.

Dan : I am starting a workshop to DIY and make perfume.

Everyone just looked at the diagram with their chopsticks frozen in midair.

Dan : People now want to go for unique experience…i believe that…

I zoned out after that before i was more interested in the pasta my mother in law cooked.

Dan got to the most crucial part of his presentation and he stood up proudly, declaring that he is giving us a chance to invest in his business.

Dan : I’ll give you all early access, 10k, for 10% of the business.

He first looked at me before turning away to my wife.

Dan : Aiyah, James no money one lah. i know. haha…Lisa, how about it? What do you think?

Lisa : Ermm…we’re kind of saving up for our HDB…and we don’t know anything about doing business…

My wife kicked me under the table and i looked at her before turning to Dan.

Dan turned to our in laws and tried to pitch it to them only to have them turn him down outright. Keng and Wen were more subtle and polite in their rejection, they simply said that they’re retired and they cannot afford to be investing in high risk ventures.

Keng : Our money are mostly in fixed deposit…and…

Keng did not forget to throw in a jibe.

Keng : We’re paying for the house’s utilities, the maintainence and upkeep, even the internet…

Dan : pa, don’t put it like this la, we’re paying for the netflix and disney plus subscription ok, that one you all also got watch…

I wanted to roll my eyes when Dan said that because Suzy was the one paying for it.

Realising that no one is supporting him, he turned his attention to his wife.

My sister in law Suzy, is a nice person, i don’t know what she sees in Dan. I’m going to start with her looks. She is hot.

Suzy, at 1.65m tall, carried herself with an air of effortless grace, one look at her, your mind will be screaming ‘class’ and ‘old money’.

Suzy is always wearing skirts. Even at home.

It’s not like i’m constantly checking her out or anything, it’s just something that you can’t help but notice. And my god, she looks hot when she wears them.

Keng looked up from his bowl and Dan took a deep breath before walking away.

Suzy : I’m sorry guys…

Suzy said as she stood up and went after Dan.

Lisa : poor sis…

I thought the family drama would stop there, and that was the end of it but no. At around midnight, when i went to the toilet, i overheard something. Something which blew my mind. Usually i’ll go to the ensuite toilet, but because i need to shit, i chose go to the common one so i don’t stink up the room.

The common toilet, has this vent window and opens into a balcony. That balcony, connects the entire level 2, linking two bedrooms, mine, and Dan’s. There are some outdoor rattan seating which you could chill, have a drink while overlooking the rail corridor.

Before i switched on the lights, i heard Dan and Suzy talking. Their voices were clear as day as i stood in front of the toilet bowl in the dark.

Suzy : I don’t have any more to lend you already!

Dan : How could that be!

Suzy : I had to clear your debt, i had to pay your car installment, your trading losses, your failed drop shipping thing, what more do you expect me to do!

Dan :Your whole family is not supportive of my business. If i continue to be an employee, i whole life will be a failure!

Suzy : What’s wrong with being an employee?

Dan snorted.

Dan :And what, be like James ah? Huh, Draw 3500 drawing shit in a manufacturing company? Got future? huh? Then what? Apply for BTO, wait for government give voucher…

Suzy : At least he has a job! He’s taking evening classes to upgrade himself! He has plans for the future!

Dan : Please la. he only married your sister for money.

Suzy : You take back those words! You’re horrible!

Dan : I’m not going to be an employee for the rest of my life. I’m born to do business…

Suzy : You are not even an employee now!

Dan : Because my boss give me attitude what! you think i can take it lying down? Of course i fired him.

Suzy : You think it’s that easy to find a job!

Dan : Why not? worse come to worse, you go and do again, i be your agent lor!

I felt my heart skip a beat.

Then i heard a smack.

PIAK!

Dan : What’s wrong with you!

Suzy : It was a one off! And i did it because of you!

Dan : You hit me for what! You go and do, one time 900, no need one week, i can finish clearing…

Suzy : arghhhhhh!

I heard the outdoor furniture topple and i quickly backed away from the toilet. The shit that was at the exit of my butthole mysteriously disappeared.

What exactly did Dan mean when he said those words?

And why is Suzy so angry?

I heard the sliding door slam a distance away and then i heard the familiar sound of Suzy sobbing.

I quietly climbed onto the toilet bowl, stepping on the edge and trying my best not to make a sound.

Looking out the ventilation window, i saw Suzy sitting on the ground. Her white, cotton skirt hiked up high as she hugged her knees while sobbing. I felt this strange stir in my belly as i looked at my sister in law.

Will i pay 900 for her?

Of course i would.

I went back to my room and climbed into bed beside Lisa.

As my eyes shut for the night, a smile spread across my face.

A sleuth of ideas just came flooding into my head. I want my sister in law, i have always liked her. The challenge however, is how do i shit in the same place i live in without getting caught.

When i woke up in the morning, a plan started to form in my head.
